What is salicylic acid (BHA) and what does it do?
Salicylic acid is the only common cosmetic acid that dissolves in oil. It reaches inside pores and loosens built-up oil and dead cells there, which makes it a key ingredient for blackheads and breakout-prone skin.

What is salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), related to compounds found in willow bark. Unlike water-soluble AHAs it dissolves in oil, so it does not stay on the skin surface but can enter the oil-filled pore.
Benefits for skin
It loosens the build-up of sebum and dead cells inside pores, reducing blackheads and congestion. Its mild anti-inflammatory effect helps red spots calm down faster. With regular use, texture becomes smoother and pores look cleaner.
How to use it
It comes as cleansers, toners and serums. A leave-on toner or serum is more effective than a cleanser because it stays on the skin longer. Apply to clean skin, then moisturise. Start two or three times a week; if your skin tolerates it well you can use it daily.
Acids can make skin more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen is a must in the morning while you use them.
Things to watch out for
Overuse can cause dryness, flaking and barrier damage. Do not use it on the same evening as retinol, benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid. Avoid it if you are allergic to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). Low-strength face products are generally considered acceptable in pregnancy, but check with your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use salicylic acid every day?
On oily, resilient skin, products up to 2% can often be used daily. If you notice dryness or stinging, go back to two or three times a week.
Salicylic acid or glycolic acid?
Salicylic acid is better for blackheads, clogged pores and acne; glycolic acid is better for dullness, rough texture and sun spots.
Does salicylic acid fade acne scars?
It can help surface dark marks fade, but it does not fix pitted (atrophic) scars. Those need dermatological treatments.
