What is centella asiatica?
Centella asiatica (gotu kola, tiger grass) is a plant that grows in humid tropical regions. Its effects come mainly from triterpenes: madecassoside, asiaticoside, madecassic acid and asiatic acid. On labels you may see the plant extract or these compounds individually.
Benefits for skin
Centella compounds reduce inflammation, calming redness and sensitivity. Lab and small clinical studies show it supports collagen production and barrier repair. That is why it is often used in routines with strong actives, for post-breakout sensitivity and in after-sun care.
How to use it
It comes as toners, serums, creams and masks. Use it morning and evening after cleansing. When retinol or acids irritate your skin, adding a centella cream to your evening routine helps skin recover faster.
Things to watch out for
Centella is usually very well tolerated, but as with any plant extract, allergy is possible in rare cases. Test a new product on a small area for a few days. The evidence is promising, but some effects are based on small studies; it does not replace treatment for serious skin problems.
